MATHEW’S RANGES (WARGES)
The Mathews Range, also known as the Lenkiyio Hills, is a remote and spectacular mountain range rising dramatically out of northern Kenya’s arid lowlands. Covered in dense, ancient forest and bursting with rare wildlife, it’s often called one of Kenya’s last true wildernesses. The range is home to towering cycads, crystal-clear streams, and endemic species found nowhere else on earth.

Itinerary Summary
At its crown sits Warges Peak, the highest point of the Mathews Range, standing at around 2,688 meters above sea level. Although not the tallest mountain in Kenya, the challenge comes from its rugged, wild trails and the untouched beauty of its surroundings. Climbing Warges offers hikers a raw, off-the-beaten-path adventure with sweeping views over Samburu land and beyond. It’s a true hidden gem for those seeking solitude, serious hiking, and an authentic encounter with Kenya’s wild heart.
Our journey kicks off on the 14th of June, with an early morning departure from Nairobi around 5:00 AM, heading north through Nanyuki, Isiolo, and Archers Post toward Samburu County. We’ll make stops along the way for snacks, stretching, and lunch, before arriving near the Mathews Range by mid-afternoon. Upon arrival, we’ll check in at our campsite or lodge near the trailhead, followed by a pre-hike briefing and time to relax, explore, or just enjoy the serenity of the wilderness. Early on 15th June, after a hearty breakfast, we begin our hike towards Warges Peak, the highest point in the Mathews Range. The trail winds through pristine indigenous forests and rugged terrain, offering a challenging but unforgettable climb. We aim to summit by late morning, taking in sweeping panoramic views before beginning our descent. The total time for this hike is about 11 hours. After returning to base, the evening is free to relax, enjoy a proper meal, and celebrate the achievement around the campfire. On 16th June, after a relaxed breakfast, we pack up and begin our journey back to Nairobi, aiming to arrive by late afternoon or early evening, wrapping up an incredible three-day wilderness adventure in
one of Kenya’s most untouched landscapes.
